India clears defence acquisition proposals worth Rs 2.12 lakh crore

Infrastructure Monday, October 26, 2026 - Updated Oct 26, 2026 08:45

India's Defence Acquisition Council on Monday gave in-principle approval to capital acquisition proposals worth about Rs 2.12 lakh crore for the Army, Navy and Air Force, with about 82 percent to be sourced from Indian industry.

Why it matters: The approvals set the procurement pipeline for Indian defence manufacturers across artillery, helicopters, drones, counter-drone systems and naval platforms, though contracts and delivery schedules come only at later stages.

India’s Defence Acquisition Council, chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, on Monday accorded Acceptance of Necessity to capital acquisition proposals for the defence forces at an estimated cost of about Rs 2,12,000 crore, with nearly 82 percent of the procurement to come from Indian industry, the Ministry of Defence said in a statement. For the Army, the approvals cover high mobility vehicles, a self-propelled tracked gun system, light multi-role helicopters, very short-range air defence systems, counter-drone systems, surveillance UAVs and a long-range kamikaze drone system; the Navy received approval for an Active Offboard Decoy System and other major naval platforms to be designed and built in India, and the Air Force for helicopters, air defence systems, weapons and a mobile X-band Doppler weather radar. Acceptance of Necessity is an in-principle administrative approval, not a contract, and the proposals must pass later acquisition stages before suppliers, contracts and delivery schedules are set.
