Romania's intelligence service said on Monday that a September 14 fire at an industrial site near a state-owned weapons factory in Brasov was the work of a sabotage network coordinated by Russia, and prosecutors said two of the three people involved are in custody in Germany while a third is at large in Poland.
Why it matters: If the attribution holds, the fire joins a run of blazes and attacks at European defence sites this autumn, and Romania is presenting it as part of a Russian hybrid campaign against the states arming Ukraine rather than as an isolated arson.
Data as of Al Jazeera report of October 27, 2026, carrying AFP and Reuters, read in full in this run. The sabotage attribution is the Romanian Intelligence Service's and DIICOT's claim: the report cites no forensic or documentary evidence for the Brasov fire, and Russia had not commented on this claim, though it has denied similar accusations before. Single report, claims attributed, grade C. Developing item.
Romania’s intelligence service said on Monday that the September 14 blaze in Brasov, at an industrial site near a state-owned weapons factory it did not name, was part of a wider campaign of sabotage operations coordinated by Russia against arms manufacturers and other military and industrial targets. The Directorate for Investigating Organized Crime and Terrorism, DIICOT, said three people living in EU countries were involved, two Belarusians and a Ukrainian: two were remanded in custody in Germany, where they were allegedly preparing similar offences, and the third remains at large in Poland.
Foreign Minister Dan Neculaescu said the fire was part of a broader sabotage campaign across Europe targeting military production, and President Nicusor Dan has described Romania as a target of a Russian hybrid war. The intelligence service said recruits for such networks are typically found on social media and paid first for harmless tasks such as photographing targets, with the work escalating over time. Russia had given no immediate comment on the Brasov claim.
