South Korea's economy grew 1.0 percent in the third quarter from the previous quarter, the Bank of Korea's advance estimate showed, more than three times the central bank's own 0.3 percent forecast, as facility investment and semiconductor exports offset a fall in private consumption.
Why it matters: A beat of that size against the central bank's own forecast makes a substantial upward revision to its 3.3 percent annual growth forecast hard to avoid, and it changes the starting point for the Bank of Korea's rate deliberations even though household consumption fell in the quarter.
Data as of Yonhap report of October 27, 2026 (Korea time), in Korean, read in full in this run, reporting the Bank of Korea advance estimate announced that day. The Bank of Korea release itself was not obtained in this run; the figures are the central bank's as reported by Yonhap, whose article credits its graphics to the Bank of Korea. South Korea’s real gross domestic product grew 1.0 percent in the third quarter from the previous quarter, according to the Bank of Korea advance estimate reported by Yonhap, well above the 0.3 percent the central bank forecast in August and following growth of 0.6 percent in the second quarter. Growth from a year earlier was 3.4 percent, down from 3.7 percent in the second quarter.
Facility investment rose 4.1 percent, led by machinery including semiconductor manufacturing equipment, and government consumption rose 1.9 percent, the two together contributing 0.7 percentage points of the 1.0 percent growth. Exports rose 2.3 percent on semiconductors, machinery and electrical equipment, while private consumption fell 0.2 percent as spending on both goods and services declined. Real gross domestic income rose 18.8 percent from a year earlier, its fastest pace since the fourth quarter of 1977, which Yonhap attributed in part to improved terms of trade as semiconductor prices rose.
