US closes $5.1 billion loan to Alliant Energy

Infrastructure Tuesday, October 27, 2026 - Updated Oct 27, 2026 22:49

The US Department of Energy has closed a $5.1 billion loan package to Alliant Energy for more than 2.6 gigawatts of new or upgraded generation, energy storage and plant upgrades in Iowa and Wisconsin, Reuters reported.

Why it matters: The closing, nearly double the $3 billion conditional loan first proposed in January 2025, adds another multi billion dollar federal loan to the Midwest gas and storage build out that data centre demand is driving, and it lands a day after Linn County denied rezoning for a separate Alliant gas plant near Cedar Rapids.

Data as of Update 2026-10-27T22:49:14-04:00: the full Reuters report by Timothy Gardner (dateline Washington, October 28) was read in full in this run via the live browser from its Investing.com republication, after a direct fetch was blocked; the capacity, homes and jobs figures, the Office of Energy Dominance Financing name, the January 2025 conditional loan origin and the Gregory Beard comment are from that report, which quotes a department release. The Department of Energy's own release itself has still not been read directly, and the department was logged in SOURCES-TO-IMPLEMENT.md in this run. Latest, October 27: The Department of Energy’s loans office, now called the Office of Energy Dominance Financing, closed the $5.1 billion package for more than 2.6 gigawatts of new or upgraded power generation, enough for nearly 1.8 million homes, supporting hundreds of construction related jobs, Reuters reported. Gregory Beard, the loan office director, said in a release that bringing new, dependable power online is strengthening energy security and lowering electricity costs for families and businesses across Iowa and Wisconsin, although Reuters noted any lowering of costs could take many years because the loans run over decades. The package began as a conditional loan of $3 billion proposed in the last days of the previous administration in January 2025.

The US Department of Energy has closed a $5.1 billion loan package to Alliant Energy to expand power generation and bolster the grid at plants in Iowa and Wisconsin, Reuters reported. The investments, from the department’s loans office, will support new natural gas fired generation, energy storage and upgrades to existing generation facilities.

The closing lands as Alliant’s Iowa capacity plans face local resistance: Linn County supervisors voted this week to deny rezoning for the company’s proposed 720 megawatt Morgan Valley gas plant near Cedar Rapids, a project Alliant ties to data centre driven load growth, and the Iowa Utilities Commission could still approve that plant over the county’s objections.
