France's household confidence indicator fell five points to 80 in October, its lowest level since June 2013 and well below its long-term average of 100, INSEE said on Tuesday.

Why it matters: A drop of this size in the euro area's second-largest consumer economy, driven by households marking down their own future finances, points to weaker French consumption into the winter and adds to the case the ECB weighed in this morning's bank lending survey.

Data as of INSEE Informations rapides No 260, published October 27, 2026 and read in full in this run, is the primary source for the indicator, its September value of 85 and the component balances. Developing item.

INSEE’s household confidence indicator fell to 80 in October from 85 in September, its lowest reading since June 2013, against a long-term average of 100. Households’ view of their future financial situation dropped nine points and of their past financial situation six points, and the balance on whether it is a good time to make major purchases fell four points.

The savings climate index eased two points to 118, still above its long-term average, so the deterioration sits in spending intentions and personal finances rather than in the capacity to save.
