Politics Wednesday, October 28, 2026 - Updated Oct 28, 2026 05:44

Canada and the United Arab Emirates signed a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement on Tuesday that will reduce or eliminate tariffs on over 99 percent of current Canadian exports to the UAE, negotiated in a record 47 days and expected to enter into force in 2027.

Why it matters: The agreement is a concrete step in Ottawa's pledge to double non-US trade over the next decade, and it pairs the market access with a new Strategic Partnership and the UAE's $70 billion investment commitment in Canada.

Canada and the United Arab Emirates signed the Canada-UAE Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement in Ottawa on Tuesday, during the first visit to Canada by a Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Prime Minister’s Office said. Once fully implemented, the agreement will reduce or eliminate tariffs on over 99 percent of current Canadian exports to the UAE, address non-tariff barriers and expand market access for Canadian goods and services in sectors including industrial products, agriculture, forestry, fish and seafood, environmental services and engineering, and it is expected to enter into force in 2027. The two governments also launched a new Strategic Partnership, signed memoranda on defence cooperation and diplomatic training, and reported progress on the UAE’s $70 billion investment commitment in Canada, first announced in November 2025, in a relationship whose two-way merchandise trade was valued at $3.5 billion in 2025.
