QatarEnergy has extended its force majeure on LNG deliveries to the end of December 2026, adding three cargoes for Italy's Edison, taking the total to 38 cargoes of about 5 billion cubic metres, with buyers in Pakistan and Bangladesh also notified through year end.
Why it matters: The extension removes Qatari term supply from the European and South Asian winter balance for the rest of the year, leaving buyers to replace cargoes on a spot market where the European benchmark traded at its highest since 2022 on Wednesday.
Data as of Edison press release of October 27, 2026, in Italian, read in full in this run, is the source for the extension to end December, the three additional cargoes, the 38 cargo total of about 5 billion cubic metres and the 27 cargoes Edison had replaced by October 27. The South Asia extensions and the Petrobangla statement are Reuters reporting carried by OilPrice.com and Egypt Oil & Gas on October 28, 2026, read in full in this run; QatarEnergy itself had not commented in that reporting. QatarEnergy has extended the force majeure on its liquefied natural gas deliveries, in force since April, to the end of December 2026. Edison, the Italian utility that takes Qatari gas at the Adriatic LNG terminal, said on October 27 that QatarEnergy will not deliver three further cargoes, taking the total under force majeure to 38 cargoes of about 5 billion cubic metres of gas. Edison said it had replaced 27 cargoes, about 2.7 billion cubic metres, by October 27 and can source alternative gas for all its customers. Its long term contract with QatarEnergy, running since 2009 for 25 years, covers 6.4 billion cubic metres a year, about a tenth of Italian consumption.
The extension also covers South Asia. Buyers in Pakistan and Bangladesh have been notified that force majeure will remain in effect through the end of the year, Reuters reported, and force majeure on November supplies to India’s Petronet LNG has also been extended. Petrobangla chairman Abdul Mannan said Bangladesh is seeking additional spot cargoes to cover the shortfall, at higher cost to its import bill. In Europe, the front month Dutch TTF price rose 1.5 percent on Wednesday to 97.53 euros per megawatt hour, its highest since the 2022 energy crisis, OilPrice.com reported.
