Infrastructure Wednesday, October 28, 2026 - Updated Oct 28, 2026 21:45

Savannah River Site officials declared a Site Area Emergency at 5:39 p.m. on Wednesday after a fire at the Savannah River National Laboratory near Aiken, South Carolina, and said the fire has since been extinguished, with no contamination reported outside the affected facility.

Why it matters: The declaration closed the site entrances to incoming traffic and restricted rail, river and air traffic near the Department of Energy complex, and the site has not yet said what caused the fire or whether any material was released inside the facility.

Data as of Savannah River Site Emergency Response Organization News Release #2, issued at 7:30 p.m. ET on October 28, 2026 and read in full in this run; the emergency declaration time, the fire and the contamination statement are the site's own. The Associated Press carried the same declaration time and traffic restrictions on October 28. Local station WRDW reporting, relayed in secondary coverage, described an unfiltered ground-level radiological release; that description is not in the site's own release and is not treated as confirmed here.
