A minor armed with two knives opened the door of the security booth outside the Israeli embassy in Belgrade at about 12:15 a.m. local time on Wednesday and slashed the gendarme inside in the left cheek, and the officer retrieved his service weapon and fatally shot the attacker, Serbian prosecutors said. Interior Minister Ivica Dacic said authorities are treating the incident as a terrorist attack, that the attacker was Serbian, from the town of Sabac, had supported ISIS and had been monitored by security forces, and that Serbia has raised its terrorism threat level to the highest level, with an increased police presence at sensitive sites and crowded public spaces.
Israel’s foreign ministry confirmed an attempted terrorist attack, said no embassy personnel were injured and that the mission was closed at the time. The wounded officer was slightly injured. In June 2024 a crossbow attacker wounded a Serbian officer guarding the same embassy before that officer returned fire and killed him.
