Why markets moved overnight

Wednesday, October 28, 2026 - Updated Oct 28, 2026 07:18

Natural gas jumped 12.87 percent to 3.04 dollars, the fourth sharp rebound against a record speculative short, while miners and chip stocks rallied on earnings into Fed decision day.

Why it matters: The overnight tape was a positioning and earnings story, not a macro shock: crowded shorts squeezed, miners bounced on results, and yields barely moved before the Federal Reserve and Bank of Canada decisions.

Data as of Market close October 27, 2026

Natural gas was the standout, up 12.87 percent to 3.04 dollars per million Btu in the market tables. This morning’s reporting finds no new fundamental driver for the move; it is the fourth consecutive sharp rebound against the record money manager short position of 599,731 contracts reported last week, and the commodities brief labels short covering as interpretation, not a reported cause (see today’s update to the natural gas positioning story).

Miners rallied across the board. Rare earth miners rose 4.84 percent, BHP rose 4.39 percent to 82.60 dollars, and uranium miners rose 4.37 percent, with copper miners up 3.89 percent alongside them. The mining brief reads the move as an earnings and positioning bounce led by Freeport’s third quarter print, not a fresh commodity leg: copper itself rose only 0.21 percent and gold fell 0.20 percent on the day (see today’s Freeport story and the Iluka Eneabba and Anfield uranium stories).

Tanker freight fell 4.05 percent to 896 dollars. The commodities roundup treats the fall as a daily pullback inside a strong week, with the index still up 11.83 percent over five sessions, not a reversal (see today’s commodities also notable roundup).

Tesla rose 4.04 percent to 407.46 dollars, extending a 9.03 percent weekly gain. No clear single driver appears in this morning’s reporting; no Tesla story was filed today.

Broadcom rose 4.0 percent to 342.33 dollars. The move follows yesterday’s coverage of the 63 billion dollar financing Broadcom organized for Anthropic chip purchases; this morning’s reporting adds only a reported 21 billion dollar bond sale, flagged single-sourced in the infra-deals roundup, and no new confirmed driver (see today’s infra-deals also notable roundup).

Semiconductors rose 3.91 percent as the AI hardware results cluster landed together: SK hynix set a shareholder return programme of about 100 trillion won, Teradyne reported test revenue up 70 percent, and UMC raised its capital budget (see today’s SK hynix, Teradyne and UMC stories).

The cross-market read is risk-on in equities and positioning-driven in energy, with rates deliberately quiet: the 10 year Treasury yield sits at 4.99 percent in the tables, down 12.4 basis points on the week, ahead of today’s Federal Reserve decision and the Bank of Canada decision at 09:45 ET, and sterling softened 0.46 percent into the UK Budget. Nothing overnight repriced the policy path; the day’s moves were made by crowded positions and company prints, and the decisions still to come today are the real test.
