An Italian military CH-47 Chinook helicopter serving with the European Union Force in Bosnia crashed during routine training in the Brcko District on Thursday, killing four people, two soldiers and two Red Cross volunteers, and injuring 11.

Why it matters: EUFOR is the European Union's standing peacekeeping mission in Bosnia, deployed since 2004 to oversee the Dayton settlement, and a fatal training crash in its Italian contingent is the mission's most serious incident in years.

Data as of Al Jazeera report of October 30, 2026, with AFP and Reuters, read in full in this run: casualty totals are EUFOR's, the composition of the dead is the Italian defence ministry's as reported there, and the hospital account is a Brcko hospital spokesman via AFP. ANSA, in Italian, carried the same incident in the feed pool. No cause has been stated. Developing item.

The helicopter, an Italian contingent CH-47 Chinook with 15 people on board, came down in the Brcko District, about 180 kilometres north of Sarajevo, during a training operation on Thursday, Al Jazeera reported with AFP and Reuters. Four people were killed and 11 injured, according to EUFOR, and the injured were in stable condition in hospital; the Italian defence ministry said the dead were two soldiers and two Red Cross volunteers, and the Italian government said everyone on board was an Italian national.

Bosnian media photographs showed the helicopter overturned in a flat field. EUFOR said it is conducting a full investigation and will release more information as it is verified, and no cause for the crash has been stated.
