Formation Bio launches $600 million fund for stalled drug candidates

Life Sciences Thursday, October 29, 2026 - Updated Oct 29, 2026 07:06

Formation Bio announced on October 28 a $600 million debut fund, the Formation Bio Drug Development Accelerator Fund, to acquire or license stalled clinical stage drug candidates and advance them with its AI native development platform.

Why it matters: A venture backed drug developer raising its own investment fund inverts the usual biotech financing model, and the fund's results will be a clean test of whether AI run clinical development actually raises success rates.

Data as of Fund announced October 28, 2026. The 10 to 15 candidate target over three to five years and the two already licensed candidates are as reported by Forbes coverage of the announcement on October 28, 2026; the fund's limited partner list was not disclosed in the release.

Formation Bio, the New York based AI native pharmaceutical company that acquires and in licenses clinical stage drug programs and develops them itself, announced on October 28 that it has raised a $600 million debut investment fund. The Formation Bio Drug Development Accelerator Fund is a separate vehicle intended to expand the company’s development capacity, financing more acquired programs than its own balance sheet could carry.

The thesis is specific. Co founder and chief executive Ben Liu argues that drug discovery is not the industry’s binding constraint; clinical development is, where most candidates fail slowly and expensively. Formation’s model buys or licenses programs that have stalled elsewhere, then runs their trials through its own technology and operating platform. Reporting on the fund’s launch put the target at acquiring or licensing 10 to 15 candidates over three to five years, with two already licensed.

Chief scientific officer Michael Ehlers framed the fund as a real world application of AI in medicine, saying few applications of AI have the potential to deliver as profound an impact as accelerating the development of new medicines. Once programs reach substantial clinical progress, Formation plans to partner with larger pharmaceutical companies for commercialization or co commercialization rather than build its own sales force.

The structure deserves scrutiny as well as attention. A drug developer that also manages outside investors’ money earns fees and carried interest on the same assets it operates, which aligns it with volume as well as with outcomes, and the announcement does not name the fund’s limited partners or the first financed candidates. What would settle the argument is the fund’s clinical record over the next several years: proof of concept readouts from acquired assets that their original owners had shelved.
