South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said North Korea fired more than ten short-range ballistic missiles toward the East Sea, and Japan's Defence Ministry said an object believed to be a ballistic missile fell outside Japan's exclusive economic zone, with no damage to vessels confirmed.
Why it matters: A salvo of more than ten short-range ballistic missiles is a larger than routine launch, and if confirmed as ballistic it would be Pyongyang's first such firing in 17 days, since October 12; Seoul is still analysing the projectiles' specifications and range.
Data as of Update 2026-10-29T00:54:30-04:00: the count and type (more than ten short-range ballistic missiles toward the East Sea, attributed to the Joint Chiefs of Staff) are from Yonhap's Korean breaking flash AKR20261029109300504, read in full via the live browser in this run; the flash consists of its headline only and gives no launch time, site or range. The fall outside Japan's exclusive economic zone, the Japan Coast Guard's no vessel damage confirmation as of 12:55 p.m. Korea time, the crisis management centre at the Prime Minister's Office, the Joint Chiefs analysing specifications and range, and the 17 days since the October 12 launch are from Yonhap's Tokyo report AKR20261029106551073 (in Korean), read in full via the live browser in this run. That report's more than 900 kilometre figure describes some missiles in the October 12 launch, not this one, and is not applied to today's launch here. North Korea launched an unidentified projectile toward the East Sea, South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff announced, according to a Yonhap breaking news flash transmitted early on October 29 Korea time. The flash gave no further detail: it did not identify the projectile type, the launch site or where the projectile landed.
Latest
South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said North Korea fired more than ten short-range ballistic missiles toward the East Sea, in a later Yonhap breaking flash. The flash carried no launch time, launch site or flight range, and the Joint Chiefs said it was analysing the projectiles’ specifications and range.
Japan’s Defence Ministry said an object believed to be a ballistic missile appeared to have fallen outside Japan’s exclusive economic zone, Yonhap reported from Tokyo. The Japan Coast Guard said that as of 12:55 p.m. no damage to vessels underway had been confirmed, and the Japanese government set up a crisis management centre at the Prime Minister’s Office and convened the relevant ministries to assess any damage.
If confirmed as ballistic, the launch would be North Korea’s first in 17 days: on October 12 Pyongyang fired ballistic missiles from the Pyongyang area toward the East Sea, a launch it later described through state media as a tactical ballistic missile test. Reuters noted that North Korea has conducted missile tests on more than 10 occasions this year.
