Rates also notable: ECB today, Bank of Japan tomorrow, Namibia hike

Rates Thursday, October 29, 2026 - Updated Oct 29, 2026 07:05

The European Central Bank decides today with a hold at 2.50 percent widely expected, the Bank of Japan concludes its meeting on Friday, Namibia raised its repo rate to 7 percent, and the Reserve Bank of India set underwriting for a 33,000 crore government auction on October 30.

Why it matters: The roundup holds today's decision calendar, the smaller primary releases that did not merit full stories, and the flagged single sourced items, so nothing in the rates pool is silently dropped.

Data as of Pool of October 28 to 29, 2026. Namibia and Korea items are single sourced from headlines, the source pages were blocked in this run, and are flagged in the body; no figures beyond the headlines are claimed for them.

ECB decision today. The European Central Bank announces at 13:15 GMT with a hold in the deposit rate at 2.50 percent widely expected and a December increase the priced direction; the full preview was published on October 25 and is not repeated. The day’s governing story is President Christine Lagarde’s announcement, covered in full elsewhere in this edition, that she steps down on February 7, 2027.

Bank of Japan tomorrow. The Bank of Japan concludes its October 29 to 30 meeting on Friday with a hold at 1.25 percent expected and its Outlook Report the focus, per the preview published on October 28. Tokyo CPI lands the same day. Japan also auctioned treasury discount bills on October 29 alongside the two year JGB sale covered in this edition.

Namibia hikes, single sourced. The Bank of Namibia raised its repo rate to 7 percent, according to New Era’s headline on October 29, with BusinessDay reporting the move as tightening in response to rising fuel prices stoking inflation. The New Era page was blocked in this run and no statement figures are claimed; treat the size of the move as unconfirmed beyond the 7 percent headline level.

Korea yields fall, single sourced. Yonhap reported in Korean that Korean treasury yields fell across the curve on October 29 as the market digested the FOMC outcome, reversing Tuesday’s pre decision rise that took the three year to 3.799 percent. The Yonhap page was not read in this run and no levels are claimed.

India auction underwriting. The Reserve Bank of India announced underwriting for the sale of 33,000 crore of government securities on October 30, 2026, the dated auction flagged in yesterday’s calendar, which includes 3,000 crore of sovereign green bonds with settlement on November 2.

New Zealand dollar reaction. The New Zealand dollar fell after the Reserve Bank of New Zealand’s surprise hold at 2.75 percent on a split vote, published on this site on October 27, defied market pricing that had leaned heavily toward a hike, CNBC reported. The hold itself is not new; the currency move is the market’s verdict on it.

PBOC swap line. The People’s Bank of China announced the renewal of a bilateral local currency swap arrangement with the Central Bank of Chile on October 29. The PBOC page was listed in the pool in Chinese and was not read in full in this run, so no size or tenor is claimed.

South Africa research. The South African Reserve Bank published a special occasional bulletin on October 28 examining how fuel price shocks pass through to inflation, inflation expectations and wages, including evidence from South African market pricing. It is research, not a policy action, and is recorded here for the pass-through debate that now runs through several central banks in this edition.
