South Korea September output jumps 3 percent in triple rebound

Rates Thursday, October 29, 2026 - Updated Oct 29, 2026 19:52

South Korea's industrial production rose 3.0 percent in September from August, its biggest monthly increase in 15 years and six months, with retail sales up 3.6 percent and facility investment up 5.3 percent in the first simultaneous rise in three months.

Why it matters: The triple rebound reverses August's simultaneous decline in all three gauges and, coming a day after third quarter GDP beat the central bank's forecast, strengthens the picture of a chip led expansion heading into the Bank of Korea's next decision.

Data as of Yonhap News Agency report of October 30, 2026 (Korea time), in Korean, read in full in this run via the live browser, reporting the National Data Agency's September Industrial Activity Trends release; the retail figure (up 3.6 percent month on month) is also corroborated by Breaking the News reporting the same release. The agency's own release text was not read directly in this run, so the figures rest on Yonhap's reporting of it, hence grade C. The National Data Agency (Statistics Korea) is already logged and browser-wired in feeds/SOURCES-TO-IMPLEMENT.md. Developing item.

South Korea’s factories, shops and boardrooms all expanded in September. The National Data Agency reported all-industry production up 3.0 percent from August, the largest monthly increase since March 2011, alongside retail sales up 3.6 percent and facility investment up 5.3 percent, Yonhap News Agency reported. Mining and manufacturing output jumped 9.0 percent, led by semiconductors, up 19.2 percent, and automobiles, up 39.9 percent as the end of a strike and of summer holidays lifted factory operating rates after August’s sharp fall.

It is the first month in three in which production, consumption and investment have risen together, reversing August, when production fell 1.2 percent. Retail’s 3.6 percent rise was its biggest in three years and seven months, with durable goods such as cars up 4.4 percent, food and beverages up 4.2 percent and clothing up 0.6 percent, while facility investment was led by transport equipment, up 7.4 percent, and machinery, up 4.7 percent. The release follows Tuesday’s third quarter GDP print, which grew 1.0 percent on the quarter and beat the Bank of Korea’s August forecast.
