Technology also notable: Kyivstar, Enphase, Malaysia, Microsoft Japan

Technology Thursday, October 29, 2026 - Updated Oct 29, 2026 07:15

Kyivstar is acquiring Ukrainian cloud provider GigaCloud in a 50 million dollar transaction, Enphase and Infineon are deploying 900 volt gallium nitride switches in solid state transformers for AI data centres, and Malaysia will require new data centres to source at least 30 percent of power from renewables.

Why it matters: The roundup holds the day's second tier: sovereign cloud consolidation in Ukraine, a power electronics step for data centre transformers, power rules in two Asian markets, and Microsoft buying solar in Japan.

Data as of Items reported October 28 to 29, 2026; most items in this roundup are single-sourced to Datacenter Dynamics or TechCrunch reporting of company and government announcements, so the roundup's evidence grade is capped at C.

Kyivstar Group is acquiring Ukrainian cloud provider GigaCloud in a transaction worth 50 million dollars, made up of a 41 million dollar acquisition price, up to 4 million dollars in deferred debt, about 3 million dollars in performance payments and up to 2 million dollars in capital expenditure compensation. GigaCloud will operate as a separate unit under its own brand and management, serves more than 1,800 enterprise customers, and generated 14 million dollars of revenue and 4.7 million dollars of EBITDA in 2025, Datacenter Dynamics reported. Ukraine’s Antimonopoly Committee approved the deal in July.

Enphase Energy and Infineon Technologies are deploying what they call the world’s first 900 volt gallium nitride monolithic bidirectional switch devices inside Enphase’s IQ Solid-State Transformer power modules for AI data centres. The companies said the devices have been tested and are being integrated into development builds, with production qualification to follow, and that the higher voltage supports unipolar 800 volt power generation and future 1,500 volt DC bus architectures with fewer components in the power path.

Malaysia’s government has approved rules requiring data centre operators to source at least 30 percent of their power from renewable sources, announced in parliament by Deputy Prime Minister Fadillah Yusof, with the Energy Commission drafting the framework. Last month Malaysia’s Data Centre Task Force was reported to have approved 5 gigawatts of additional capacity conditional on the same 30 percent threshold, against about 8.3 gigawatts in the interconnection pipeline. Separately, the United Kingdom’s Volta has acquired the Reynolds House data centre site in Manchester, and Russia will limit new cryptomining grid connections to interruptible power, Datacenter Dynamics reported.

Microsoft has signed two solar power purchase agreements in Japan with Macquarie backed Blueleaf Energy, as sole offtaker for projects entering construction and scheduled to start commercial operations in mid-2027; capacity, term and locations were not disclosed. The deals follow Microsoft’s pledge earlier this year of a 10 billion dollar investment in AI and cloud capabilities in Japan through the end of 2029. In models, Nvidia released Nemotron 3.5 Transcribe, a free open weight transcription model covering up to 40 languages at 30 billion parameters, with version 2 of its Granary open speech dataset, TechCrunch reported. And in filings, Meta’s two Form 424B5 prospectus supplements of October 28, accessions 0001193125-26-436405 and 0001193125-26-436410, fix the final terms of its equity package; they are covered in full in the edition’s existing Meta story on the infra-deals beat and are not duplicated here.
