Volkswagen posts 5.8 billion euro quarterly net loss

Infrastructure Thursday, October 29, 2026 - Updated Oct 29, 2026 05:54

Volkswagen reported a net loss of about 5.8 billion euros for the third quarter, with an operating loss of 5.9 billion euros against a 1.3 billion euro operating loss a year earlier, as 7.8 billion euros of special charges, including a goodwill writedown of about 6.4 billion euros at Porsche, hit a quarter in which revenue fell about 6 percent to 75.3 billion euros.

Why it matters: The loss was more than double the 2.6 billion euro operating loss analysts had forecast, deliveries fell 14.3 percent with China down 38.5 percent, and the group is negotiating job cuts that could reach 100,000, on top of a profit forecast already cut in September to at most 1 percent of revenue.

Data as of Correction 2026-10-29T05:54:09-04:00: the first version of this item, published minutes earlier, carried wrong figures (revenue, the year earlier operating result, deliveries and the Porsche writedown) taken from a faulty read of the Tagesschau report, and has been replaced. The figures here are from two full reads that agree: Tagesschau (ARD), in German, October 29, 2026, and Reuters via Investing.com, October 29, 2026, both read in full in this run. The net loss of about 5.8 billion euros is Tagesschau's (ANSA gives 5.82 billion); the operating loss of 5.9 billion euros, the 1.3 billion euro loss a year earlier and the 2.6 billion euro Visible Alpha consensus are Reuters'; the 7.8 billion euros of special charges, the Porsche goodwill writedown, the delivery figures and the September guidance cut are Tagesschau's. Volkswagen fell deeper into loss in the third quarter. The group reported a net loss of about 5.8 billion euros, and Reuters put the operating loss at 5.9 billion euros, more than four times the 1.3 billion euro operating loss of a year earlier and more than double the 2.6 billion euro loss analysts surveyed by Visible Alpha had expected. Revenue fell about 6 percent to 75.3 billion euros.

Special charges of 7.8 billion euros drove the result, the largest a goodwill writedown of about 6.4 billion euros at Porsche, whose expected future earnings have been cut as the sports car maker struggles with weak demand and the cost of correcting its electric vehicle course. The volume figures were weak in their own right: group deliveries fell 14.3 percent to 1.89 million vehicles in the quarter, and sales in China, the group’s largest market, fell 38.5 percent to just under 406,000 vehicles against intense local competition. US tariffs and restructuring costs added to the pressure.

Management had already cut the year’s profit forecast sharply in mid September, to an operating return of at most 1 percent of revenue, down from 4.0 to 5.5 percent, and expects revenue of about 315 billion euros. Finance chief Arno Antlitz said the adjusted operating return of 3.8 percent after nine months was too little to fund the investment the group needs, and that the company could not afford to lose time. A savings programme already aims to cut 50,000 jobs by 2030, and Tagesschau reported a further 50,000 jobs and four German plants now at risk in negotiations with employees, which would take the planned total to 100,000 under chief executive Oliver Blume.
