Alphabet shares fell 12.64 percent on Thursday to 283.82 dollars, the steepest one day decline since the company went public in 2004. The fall erased an estimated 482 billion to 500 billion dollars of market value, the second largest one day loss in United States market history, behind only Nvidia’s drop in January 2025.
The trigger was the cash line, not the revenue line. Third quarter revenue rose 25 percent to 127.6 billion dollars and Google Cloud revenue more than doubled to 30.7 billion dollars, with a backlog of about 560 billion dollars. But capital expenditure jumped to a record 51.4 billion dollars, more than twice the year ago quarter, and free cash flow swung to negative 9.07 billion dollars, well beyond the roughly 2.7 billion dollar deficit analysts had expected and a second consecutive negative quarter after the second quarter’s 5.9 billion dollar outflow.
The core business also slowed at the wrong moment. Search revenue rose 12 percent to 63.35 billion dollars, missing consensus of about 65 billion dollars, down from 17 percent growth in the second quarter, with paid click growth slowing to 8 percent from 13 percent. Management attributed part of the deceleration to lower monetisation inside AI Mode and to foreign exchange, and said currency headwinds would widen in the fourth quarter, even as it expands advertising inside AI Overviews and AI Mode internationally.
Net income fell 25 percent to 26.2 billion dollars despite operating income of 40.6 billion dollars, after other expenses and share issuance weighed on the bottom line. Alphabet held full year 2026 capital expenditure guidance at 195 billion to 205 billion dollars and signalled a larger budget for 2027, with contingent commitments in its filing rising about 23 billion dollars in the quarter to roughly 98.5 billion dollars.
The read for the sector is direct. A company can double its cloud revenue and still lose half a trillion dollars of value in a day if the spending required to win that revenue outruns the cash its advertising engine generates, and if the engine itself is growing more slowly because AI answers monetise worse than search results pages.
