Qatari mediators hold marathon Tehran talks on US-Iran deal

Politics Friday, October 30, 2026 - Updated Oct 30, 2026 21:42

Qatari mediators held more than 12 hours of talks in Tehran on Friday aimed at reciprocal steps that would restart direct US-Iran negotiations before the midterms, Axios reported, with the talks set to continue in Doha on Saturday.

Why it matters: The mediation is running against a stated risk that the United States is days from a possible military operation against Iran, so whether the reciprocal steps unlock direct talks decides whether the confrontation moves toward negotiation or toward a joint US-Israeli strike after the election.

Data as of Axios report by Barak Ravid, published October 30, 2026 (evening, Eastern), read in full in this run. Single source, and every source in it is unnamed: diplomatic sources, a US official and a regional source. No Qatari, Iranian or US official statement confirming the talks was in the reporting read. Developing item.

Qatari mediators held talks in Tehran for more than 12 hours on Friday with the Iranian side and stayed in regular contact with the White House during the session, Axios reported, citing diplomatic sources. The mediators are pushing Washington and Tehran to agree to reciprocal steps, to be implemented over a few days, that would return them to direct talks on Iran’s nuclear programme and other issues, with the talks set to continue in Doha on Saturday.

The sticking point is the order of concessions: Washington insists Iran make nuclear concessions as part of resuming talks, while Tehran insists the United States first lift its naval blockade, release frozen funds and allow Iran to sell oil. As a confidence building trade, the Qataris are trying to persuade Iran to let United Nations inspectors visit its bombed nuclear sites, with the United States responding with some sanctions relief, and Egypt, Turkey, Iraq, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia have also been urging Iran to resume negotiations before the midterms.
