Final Treasury survey data put US portfolio holdings of foreign securities at $19.3 trillion at year-end 2025, up from $15.8 trillion a year earlier, with the increase concentrated in equities.
Why it matters: The annual TIC survey is the definitive map of US investors' exposure abroad, and a $3.4 trillion one-year rise, led by equities, shows how much of the US savings pool now rides on foreign markets.
Data as of US Treasury press release sb0672, October 30, 2026, read in full in this run; final annual survey data for year-end 2025, conducted jointly by Treasury, the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and the Board of Governors.
US portfolio holdings of foreign securities were $19.3 trillion at year-end 2025, final survey data released by the Treasury Department on Friday showed, up from $15.8 trillion at year-end 2024. Equity accounted for $15.2 trillion of the total, against $3.6 trillion in long-term debt securities and $0.4 trillion in short-term debt, and Treasury said the increase over the year was mainly in equity.
By destination, the largest holdings were in the Cayman Islands at $3.1 trillion, followed by the United Kingdom at $2.0 trillion, Canada at $1.9 trillion and Japan at $1.5 trillion. The companion survey of foreign holdings of US securities, for end-June 2026, is still being processed, with preliminary results expected on February 26, 2027.
