Enterprise spending on cloud infrastructure services jumped 55 percent year on year in the third quarter to 168 billion dollars, according to Synergy Research Group data reported by Datacenter Dynamics. It was the twelfth consecutive quarter of growth, and the quarterly total is more than double the same period in 2024.
Synergy attributes the acceleration to AI. Growth rates had been declining before the launch of ChatGPT in 2022; since then the market has grown 185 percent, and AI specific cloud services now represent a third of the total. The United States remains the largest market at 44 percent share and, among major countries, the fastest growing.
The share table is the familiar one with a twist at the edges. Amazon leads with 26 percent, followed by Microsoft at 19 percent and Google at 16 percent, with both of the challengers improving their growth rates. Synergy also says neoclouds continue to erode the top providers’ share, which matches the structure of the week’s other news: demand large enough to fund both the hyperscalers’ programmes and a new tier of specialist GPU landlords.
Chief analyst John Dinsdale’s summary was that AI has transformed the cloud market’s capabilities, demand and growth opportunities, with leading providers benefiting from surging revenues while facing a changed landscape in which AI labs and neoclouds are both partners and competitors. Read against Friday’s market action, the two stories are the same story from opposite sides: end demand growing at 55 percent, and equity investors repricing who captures the margin on it.
