IOM says Yemen fighting has displaced over 300,000 people

Politics Sunday, November 1, 2026 - Updated Nov 1, 2026 11:43

More than 300,000 people have fled fighting in western Yemen, almost all of them in the past two months, the International Organization for Migration said on Sunday, and the agency needs $45 million over the next six months for emergency assistance.

Why it matters: The displacement is the largest movement of people since the western Yemen escalation began in June, and it is landing on an aid operation that was already short of money, with Aden alone now hosting more than 56,000 displaced people.

Data as of IOM statement of Sunday, November 1, 2026, as reported by Arab News and by Anadolu Agency (in Turkish), both read in full in this run. The IOM's own published series is consistent with the figure: its October 23 release put displacement at more than 268,000 and its Displacement Tracking Matrix update of October 28 at about 286,711. The Sunday statement itself had not been posted to iom.int when checked. Developing item.

More than 300,000 people have fled their homes because of fighting in western Yemen, almost all of them in the past two months, the International Organization for Migration said on Sunday. More than 43,000 people have left the Al-Madaribah Wa Al-Arah district of Lahj province since the start of October, the highest figure for any district in the country, and Aden now hosts more than 56,000 displaced people, many of them arriving from Taiz province.

In the city of Taiz, clashes have cut off access to neighbouring areas and pushed the price of many essentials up as much as fivefold, the agency said, leaving families unable to afford basic food. The IOM has five mobile medical teams working across Taiz, Marib, Lahj and Aden, and it says it needs $45 million over the next six months to fund emergency assistance as displacement grows.
