Sunrise approves Syerston scandium mine on US financing

Mining Sunday, November 1, 2026 - Updated Nov 1, 2026 18:45

Sunrise Energy Metals has approved the final investment decision for its Syerston scandium mine and refinery in New South Wales, targeting first production in the second half of 2028 on a conditional US commitment of up to 400 million dollars.

Why it matters: At 60 tonnes of scandium oxide a year, Syerston would be a major primary source of the metal outside China, which now accounts for most supply, and its financing ties that supply directly to the US Department of War.

Data as of Sunrise Energy Metals announcement of November 2, 2026 (Australia), 'Syerston Scandium Project FID Approved', as reported by Bloomberg on November 1, 2026 and in announcement coverage read in full in this run. The Bloomberg article is paywalled beyond its opening paragraphs; the production, grade and project life figures are the company's, from its announcement. The US financing is a conditional commitment, not drawn debt. Developing item.

Sunrise Energy Metals, the Australian miner chaired by Robert Friedland, has approved the final investment decision for its Syerston scandium mine and refinery in central-west New South Wales, and is targeting first commercial production in the second half of 2028. The initial operation is designed to process 64,000 tonnes of ore a year and produce 60 tonnes of high-purity scandium oxide annually over a 32-year life, and early works are already under way, with water pipeline construction started in October. The decision was supported by a conditional commitment for up to 400 million US dollars in long-term debt from the US Department of War’s Office of Strategic Capital, which has still to be converted into drawn financing.
