Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis has concluded a two day visit to Pyongyang, the first by a Swiss government minister to North Korea since Micheline Calmy-Rey went in 2003, aimed at re-establishing political dialogue with Kim Jong Un’s regime, swissinfo reported. In Pyongyang, Cassis met Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui and Jo Yong Won, a secretary of the ruling Workers’ Party Central Committee, for talks on normalising political relations, resuming political dialogue and the security situation on the Korean Peninsula, and said he was delighted to mark the official reopening of the Swiss diplomatic mission, calling it a concrete step towards strengthening direct dialogue. The diplomatic office, closed in March 2020 during the Covid pandemic and operational again since October 19, reports to the Swiss embassy in Beijing, which remains responsible for diplomatic and consular relations with North Korea. Cassis told the Keystone-ATS news agency on Saturday that he had offered Switzerland’s help in facilitating dialogue to ease tensions on the peninsula and that the proposal appeared well received, Euronews reported, and in Seoul on October 30 and 31 he briefed South Korean officials, including National Security Adviser Wi Sung-lac, on the Pyongyang talks.
Swiss foreign minister reopens Pyongyang office on first visit since 2003
Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis has concluded a two day visit to Pyongyang, the first by a Swiss government minister to North Korea since 2003, marking the official reopening of the Swiss diplomatic office there.
Why it matters: The reopening restores a direct Western diplomatic channel to Pyongyang that had been closed since March 2020, at a time when communication channels with North Korea are scarce.
