California Resources and Bloom Energy eye 1 gigawatt of fuel cells

Infrastructure Tuesday, November 3, 2026 - Updated Nov 3, 2026 13:11

California Resources Corporation and Bloom Energy have signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding to evaluate developing 1 gigawatt or more of fuel cell generation in California, with data centres among the targeted buyers.

Why it matters: The plan pairs Bloom's solid oxide fuel cells with carbon capture handled by CRC's Carbon TerraVault business, another route to firm on-site power for data centres that cannot wait for grid connections.

Data as of Datacenter Dynamics report of November 3, 2026, read in full in this run; single source, and the agreement is a non-binding memorandum of understanding, so no project, capacity or timetable is committed. Developing item.

California Resources Corporation (CRC) and Bloom Energy have signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding to evaluate the deployment of 1 gigawatt or more of Bloom’s solid oxide fuel cells in California, coupled with carbon capture systems. The partners will seek offtake customers including data centres, utilities, community choice aggregators, municipalities and other industrial users, across front-of-the-meter and behind-the-meter projects in Central and Northern California.

Bloom would supply the fuel cells and third-party carbon capture technology, while CRC’s carbon management business, Carbon TerraVault, is expected to handle carbon dioxide transport and storage, with CRC managing the projects. The companies said up to three million metric tons per year of carbon dioxide could potentially be captured and stored.
