Global crude oil refinery inputs fell by 4.8 million barrels per day, or 6 percent, in the second quarter of 2026 after the Middle East conflict began, the US Energy Information Administration said, before recovering by 1.8 million barrels per day in the third quarter.
Why it matters: The drop quantifies how deeply the Hormuz supply loss cut into global refining, and third quarter throughput still ran about 5 percent below a year earlier, which keeps product markets, diesel in particular, tight.
Data as of US Energy Information Administration analysis of November 3, 2026, read in full in this run; all figures are the EIA's own, based on Kpler data as cited in the release. Developing item.
Global crude oil refinery inputs fell by 4.8 million barrels per day in the second quarter of 2026, a 6 percent drop that followed the start of conflict in the Middle East in late February, the Energy Information Administration said on Tuesday, using Kpler data. Inputs in China fell by 2.1 million barrels per day in the quarter, inputs in Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates each fell by 0.7 million, and Russian inputs fell by 0.6 million as attacks on its oil infrastructure intensified.
Throughput recovered by 1.8 million barrels per day in the third quarter as refiners adjusted to new trade flows and more Middle Eastern crude reached the market, and US inputs rose by 0.5 million barrels per day in each quarter. Third quarter global inputs still averaged about 5 percent below the same period of 2025.
