The European Commission launched the first matching round under its Biomethane Mechanism on Wednesday, inviting potential buyers across Europe to submit their biomethane demand on the EU Energy and Raw Materials Platform between November 4 and December 23, 2026. Suppliers will be able to express interest in meeting that demand from January 21 to March 4, 2027, with matching results due on March 18, 2027.
The launch comes with a new Regulatory Dashboard designed to help market participants compare national compliance frameworks for biomethane. The dashboard initially covers selected EU countries that already account for more than 90 percent of the bloc’s current biomethane production, and the Commission said making that information accessible is meant to support cross border trade and a more integrated European market.
The mechanism itself, launched in June 2026, is voluntary and free of charge. Participants whose demand and supply match receive each other’s contact information and pursue any commercial arrangement outside the mechanism, so the round creates introductions rather than contracts, and no volumes or prices were published with the launch.
The context is the gas market documented in this week’s reporting: European storage entering winter at its lowest since 2013 and prices above 100 euros per megawatt hour. Biomethane is small against that balance today, but it is domestic, storable and dispatchable in existing gas infrastructure, which is why Brussels is building market plumbing for it now rather than after the winter.
