Infra deals also notable: Shield AI plans billion dollar raise

Infrastructure Wednesday, November 4, 2026 - Updated Nov 4, 2026 07:08

Shield AI's chief executive says the defence company plans to raise at least 1 billion dollars early next year to fund production of its X-BAT autonomous fighter, in a day of smaller fund closes, grid funding data and United States infrastructure awards.

Why it matters: None of these items clears the bar for a full story on its own, but together they show defence autonomy still raising at scale, European venture closing its largest early stage fund, and public money moving into water, rail and disaster recovery work.

Data as of Items dated November 2 to 4, 2026, as cited per item. The Shield AI item is a stated plan by its chief executive, not a launched or closed raise. The smart grid total is Mercom Capital's compiled funding data for the first nine months of 2026.

Shield AI plans a billion dollar plus raise. Shield AI chief executive Gary Steele said at a Bloomberg event in London on November 3 that the company plans to raise more than 1 billion dollars, likely early next year, to support production of its X-BAT vertical take off autonomous fighter, and that it will make further acquisitions. It is a stated intention, not a launched round, and no valuation or investor was named.

Creandum closes its largest fund. Stockholm based Creandum has closed its eighth fund at 750 million dollars, about 668 million euros, its largest to date, from about 30 institutional investors in Europe and the United States. It plans about 30 early stage investments over the next two years, split between new bets and follow on rounds. Its previous fund closed at 500 million euros in 2024.

Smart grid funding totals 3 billion dollars in nine months. Corporate funding for smart grid companies totalled 3 billion dollars in the first nine months of 2026, Mercom Capital reported. The figure is a compiled sector total across venture, public market and debt financing, not a single transaction, and it is carried as a scale marker for grid technology capital formation.

Burns and McDonnell completes Missouri water segment. Burns and McDonnell has completed a segment of a 145 million dollar water project in Missouri, Construction Dive reported on November 3. It is a construction completion milestone on an existing project, not a new award or financing.

United States public awards in the pool. Federal items in the morning pool included 1.3 billion dollars of FEMA disaster recovery and resilience commitments and 1.24 billion dollars of Department of Transportation rail funding deployed from infrastructure law funds, both reported November 3. Neither is a new appropriation; both are allocations of previously authorised money, and they are noted here rather than presented as new deals.

Aliter raises 50 million pound annex fund. Aliter Capital has raised a 50 million pound annex fund to extend its ownership of two United Kingdom technology platforms, AltAssets reported on November 4. Annex funds of this kind let a sponsor hold assets beyond a main fund’s life without a full continuation vehicle.
