Hong Kong court sentences Joshua Wong to ten more years

Politics Wednesday, November 4, 2026 - Updated Nov 4, 2026 22:43

Hong Kong's High Court sentenced activist Joshua Wong Chi-fung to 10 years in prison on Thursday for conspiring to collude with foreign forces, extending his imprisonment to late 2036.

Why it matters: Wong is the best known of the 2019 protest leaders, and the sentence, at the statutory minimum for serious collusion cases, shows Hong Kong's national security courts imposing decade-long terms for sanctions advocacy aimed at foreign governments.

Hong Kong’s High Court on Thursday sentenced activist Joshua Wong Chi-fung to 10 years in prison after he pleaded guilty in early September to conspiring with fugitive former lawmaker Nathan Law Kwun-chung and others to collude with foreign forces, over a campaign to instigate sanctions against Beijing and Hong Kong following the 2019 protests. Mr Justice William Tam Yiu-ho set a starting point of 13 years and reduced it to 10 years, the minimum for serious collusion offences under the national security law, saying Wong had kept pursuing an international campaign after the law took effect in June 2020.

Wong, who turned 30 last month, had been due to finish a sentence of four years and eight months for conspiracy to commit subversion in January; with the remainder of that term running concurrently, he is now expected to remain in prison until late 2036.
