Nutrien to shut White Springs phosphate plant in 2027

Mining Wednesday, November 4, 2026 - Updated Nov 4, 2026 17:44

Nutrien will shut its White Springs phosphate facility in the second quarter of 2027 after third quarter net earnings of 0.29 billion dollars, as the mine nears the end of its economically recoverable reserves.

Why it matters: White Springs accounts for about 20 percent of Nutrien's phosphate sales, so the closure reshapes North American phosphate supply from the world's largest fertilizer producer while cutting about 50 million dollars a year in sustaining capital and lease costs.

Data as of Nutrien's own third quarter 2026 results release dated November 4, 2026, read in this run; the same release is Exhibit 99.1 to the Form 6-K filed the same day (accession 0001193125-26-447603). All earnings, guidance and closure figures are the company's own; Reuters reported the profit figure missed analyst estimates. Developing item.

Nutrien reported third quarter net earnings of 0.29 billion dollars, or 0.60 dollars a diluted share, with adjusted EBITDA of 1.31 billion dollars, and said it will shut down operations at its White Springs phosphate facility in Florida in the second quarter of 2027. The company said the mine is approaching the end of its economically recoverable reserve life, with rising operating costs and capital requirements, and that the closure should reduce annual sustaining capital expenditures and lease payments by about 50 million dollars.

White Springs is expected to account for about 20 percent of Nutrien’s 2026 phosphate sales, and the company lowered its phosphate sales volume guidance to 2.40 to 2.55 million tonnes, citing deferred customer demand and lower operating rates at the plant. Nutrien also revised its retail adjusted EBITDA guidance to 1.72 to 1.85 billion dollars, reflecting lower third quarter crop nutrient gross margins.
