China clients expect 1 percent of $70 billion Nvidia chip order

Technology Wednesday, November 4, 2026 - Updated Nov 4, 2026 01:18

Alibaba, Tencent, ByteDance and other Chinese AI and cloud majors ordered about 6 million Nvidia RTX Pro 5500 chips worth $70 billion but expect to receive only some ten thousand of them, roughly 1 percent, within the next four months, Bloomberg reported.

Why it matters: If the delivery share holds, China's largest AI builders face a far tighter supply of advanced Nvidia chips than their order books imply, which raises the value of offshore leasing routes of the kind just closed to Tencent.

Chinese AI and cloud majors including Alibaba, Tencent and ByteDance ordered about 6 million of Nvidia’s RTX Pro 5500 chips, worth about $70 billion, but expect to receive only some ten thousand chips, roughly 1 percent of the order, within the next four months, Bloomberg reported.

The reason given is production capacity: Nvidia is struggling to expand output fast enough to meet surging demand for its advanced AI chips as the data centre buildout continues.
