Rates Wednesday, November 4, 2026 - Updated Nov 4, 2026 18:49

South Korea's current account surplus reached a record 61.46 billion dollars in September, the first month above 60 billion dollars, as semiconductor exports rose 260.3 percent from a year earlier, the Bank of Korea's provisional balance of payments data showed.

Why it matters: A record external surplus of this size, built on chip exports, strengthens the won's funding backdrop and confirms South Korea as the surplus economy of the AI hardware cycle, with the central bank now expecting the annual surplus to pass its 450 billion dollar forecast.
