German factory orders rebound 4.4 percent in September

Rates Thursday, November 5, 2026 - Updated Nov 5, 2026 07:32

German manufacturing new orders rose 4.4 percent in September from the previous month, Destatis reported on Thursday, rebounding from a revised 10.1 percent fall in August, with orders excluding large scale orders up 5.1 percent.

Why it matters: The rebound was led by a 10.5 percent jump in automotive orders after two weak months of plant changeovers and holidays, and the quarterly comparison is nearly flat, so the print reads as payback in a volatile series rather than a turn in German industry.

Data as of Destatis press release No. 385 of November 5, 2026, read in full in this run; every figure is the office's own provisional data. Developing item.

Real new orders in German manufacturing rose 4.4 percent in September 2026 from the previous month after seasonal and calendar adjustment, and were 3.3 percent higher than a year earlier, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reported on Thursday. Excluding large scale orders, new orders rose 5.1 percent on the month. The increase followed a fall of 10.1 percent in August, revised from a provisional 10.6 percent decline, and the less volatile three month comparison showed total new orders just 0.2 percent higher in the third quarter than in the second.

Destatis attributed the September rise primarily to the automotive industry, where orders jumped 10.5 percent after two months at a low level in part because of production changeovers and factory holidays, and to machinery and equipment, up 8.3 percent with help from a large scale order for engines and turbines. Orders for other transport equipment, including aircraft, ships, trains and military vehicles, fell 10.4 percent. Domestic orders rose 6.6 percent and foreign orders 2.8 percent, with euro area orders up 4.5 percent. Manufacturing turnover rose 0.2 percent on the month.
