Cleveland Fed's Hammack says policy must turn restrictive

Rates Thursday, November 5, 2026 - Updated Nov 5, 2026 09:53

Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack said on Thursday that she expects monetary policy will need to move to a restrictive stance to bring inflation back to 2 percent, and that she prefers to get there through more frequent smaller adjustments.

Why it matters: Hammack dissented in favour of a rate hike at last week's meeting, and her call for a restrictive stance, made the same morning the Bank of England raised its rate to 4 percent, keeps a December Fed increase in play.

Data as of Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland press release of November 5, 2026, publishing Hammack's panel remarks at the SNB and Its Watchers Conference in Zurich, read in full in this run; every quote is the release's own. The dissent and last week's decision are Reuters context. Developing item.

Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack, in panel remarks at the SNB and Its Watchers Conference in Zurich published by her bank on Thursday, said she expects that monetary policy will need to move to a restrictive stance to bring inflation back to 2 percent in a timely manner, with inflation now above the Fed’s goal for nearly six years and the pressures she is seeing relatively broad based, reflecting both supply and demand. She said she prefers getting to that stance through more frequent smaller adjustments when possible, which would be less disruptive to households, businesses and financial markets and would reduce the risk of policy falling behind and an inflationary mindset taking hold. Reuters reported that Hammack, along with Governor Lisa Cook, dissented in favour of a rate hike at last week’s meeting, when the Fed left its target range at 3.75 to 4.00 percent.
