The Taiwan dollar weakened past 33 per US dollar for the first time since April 2025, falling as much as 0.5 percent to 33.040 as the AI share rout hit the island's tech-heavy market.
Why it matters: The currency was Asia's worst performer on Friday, a sign the AI selloff that triggered trading halts in Seoul is now transmitting through regional foreign exchange as investors cut exposure to the chip supply chain.

The Taiwan dollar fell as much as 0.5 percent to 33.040 per US dollar on Friday, weakening past the 33 level for the first time since April 2025 and making it Asia’s worst-performing currency on the day, Bloomberg reported. A gauge of Taiwan’s stocks was down around 6 percent as the broad retreat in artificial intelligence shares weighed on the island’s tech-heavy equity market.
The move extends the regional pattern set in Seoul, where the Kospi fell below 5,000 with trading halts, and in Tokyo, where the Nikkei neared bear market territory, as the AI trade unwind that began in the United States moved through Asia’s chip-exposed markets.
