Politics Thursday, November 5, 2026 - Updated Nov 5, 2026 10:36

The Treasury and the IRS designated all 6,576 nominated census tracts as qualified opportunity zones, effective January 1, 2027 for ten years.

Why it matters: The designations lock in the geography of a permanently renewed tax incentive that has drawn more than $110 billion of private investment since 2017, with 2,594 of the new tracts in rural areas eligible for enhanced benefits.

Data as of US Treasury press release sb0682 of November 5, 2026, read in full in this run; all figures are the release's own. Developing item.

The Treasury and the Internal Revenue Service announced the qualified opportunity zone designations for all 50 states, the territories and the District of Columbia. All 6,576 eligible census tracts nominated by governors and the Mayor of the District of Columbia were designated, of which 2,594 are rural tracts eligible for increased benefits. The designations take effect on January 1, 2027 and last ten years.

The release said the Working Families Tax Cuts permanently renewed the opportunity zone incentive, added enhanced incentives for investment in eligible rural communities and set a process for redesignating zones every ten years. Treasury said more than $110 billion of private sector investment has been made since the incentives were established in 2017.
