China confirms talks on Xi Trump Putin meeting

China's foreign ministry said Beijing is in communication with the relevant parties about a meeting of Xi Jinping, Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, the first confirmation that a three leader meeting at this month's APEC summit in Shenzhen is under discussion.

Why it matters: A trilateral on the APEC sidelines would put Putin beside the US and Chinese presidents while the Ukraine war is unresolved and the US China trade truce is set to expire in January, though nothing is set and analysts quoted by the Associated Press expect a photo opportunity more than decisions.

China confirmed for the first time that discussions are underway on a meeting between Xi Jinping, Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, the Associated Press reported. Foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said at a press briefing in Beijing this week that China is in communication with the relevant parties regarding a meeting between the three heads of state. Nothing is set.

The meeting would take place this month on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation leaders’ summit in Shenzhen, which China hosts this year. Trump is expected to travel to Shenzhen to meet Xi for the third time this year, and he has said he would be interested in meeting Xi and Putin in China to discuss nuclear arms control. No Russian official is quoted in the report, and analysts quoted by the Associated Press said the three leaders’ interests are at odds and the meeting may produce a photograph rather than substantive agreements.
