Rates Friday, November 6, 2026 - Updated Nov 6, 2026 07:25

German industrial production rose 0.7 percent in September from August, Destatis reported, as automotive output jumped 17.1 percent after two weak months, though output across the third quarter was still 0.4 percent below the second quarter.

Why it matters: The September rise was a rebound in one sector rather than a broad recovery, with machinery output down 6.5 percent and construction down 2.6 percent, and August was revised down sharply to a 1.0 percent rise from 2.0 percent.

Data as of Destatis press release No. 389 of November 6, 2026, read in full in this run; September figures are provisional, seasonally and calendar adjusted unless stated. Developing item.

German industrial production rose 0.7 percent in September 2026 from August and was up 0.4 percent from September 2025, according to provisional data from the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis). The gain was led by the automotive industry, where production jumped 17.1 percent on the month after two months at a low level because of production changeovers and factory holidays, and by pharmaceuticals, up 8.0 percent. Machinery and equipment output fell 6.5 percent, after a 5.8 percent rise in August, and construction output fell 2.6 percent.

Production excluding energy and construction rose 1.7 percent on the month, with capital goods up 3.0 percent, consumer goods up 0.8 percent and intermediate goods up 0.1 percent, while energy production fell 1.2 percent. Destatis revised August production down to a 1.0 percent monthly rise from the provisional 2.0 percent, citing additional construction data from advance turnover tax returns, and said third quarter production overall was 0.4 percent below the second quarter. Production in energy-intensive industrial branches rose 0.8 percent in September but was 1.9 percent below a year earlier.
