Google confirms $17 billion data center campus in Cheyenne

Google has formally announced its first Wyoming data center, a campus in Cheyenne backed by a $17 billion commitment and a 702MW fuel cell project with carbon capture.

Why it matters: The campus, previously developed by Crusoe as Project Jade, pairs up to a reported 2.7GW of planned capacity with on-site gas fuel cells and sequestration, another case of a hyperscaler building its own power stack rather than waiting on the grid.

Google has formally announced its first data center in Wyoming, a campus in Cheyenne, Laramie County, backed by a $17 billion commitment in the state, Datacenter Dynamics reported. The company did not disclose the campus capacity, though earlier reports suggest it could total up to 2.7GW, and it is developing the facility with Tallgrass Energy, Black Hills Energy, American Electric Power and Related Digital on a 716 acre parcel in the Switchgrass Industrial Park, with four data halls planned and construction slated to complete by 2031.

Power is the distinctive part of the project. The campus will take power from a 702MW fuel cell project with carbon capture and storage under a power purchase agreement signed with AEP last month, with Bloom Energy supplying the solid oxide fuel cells and the captured carbon dioxide sequestered at Tallgrass’s Eastern Wyoming Sequestration Hub, alongside gas generation from Tallgrass and Black Hills. The site was previously being developed by Crusoe as a 1.8GW campus known as Project Jade before Crusoe paused work in June at its customer’s request.
