Philippine inflation rises to 7.8 percent in October

Rates Friday, November 6, 2026 - Updated Nov 6, 2026 07:20

Philippine headline inflation accelerated to 7.8 percent in October from 7.2 percent in September, the fastest pace since February 2023, as transport costs rose 20.1 percent on the year.

Why it matters: Inflation is now nearly double the top of the central bank's 2 to 4 percent target range, with core inflation also rising to 5.4 percent, which leaves the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas little room to look through what began as an energy shock.

Data as of Philippine Statistics Authority CPI release for October 2026, published November 5, 2026 and read in full in this run; every figure is the Authority's own.

The Philippines’ headline inflation rate accelerated to 7.8 percent in October 2026 from 7.2 percent in September, the Philippine Statistics Authority reported on Thursday, November 5. The reading brings average inflation for the first ten months of the year to 5.6 percent, against 1.7 percent in October 2025, and BusinessWorld noted it is the fastest pace since February 2023. It landed inside the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas’ 7.1 to 8.1 percent forecast range for the month but well above the bank’s 2 to 4 percent target band.

Transport was the main driver. The transport index rose 20.1 percent from a year earlier, up from 14.6 percent in September, and contributed 1.8 percentage points of the headline rate. Housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels inflation accelerated to 9.3 percent from 8.4 percent, contributing 1.9 percentage points. Food and non-alcoholic beverages remained the largest single contributor at 2.4 percentage points, even as that group’s inflation slowed to 6.1 percent from 6.7 percent, with rice inflation still at 20.7 percent.

The detail argues against treating the print as a one-off energy pass-through. Core inflation, which excludes selected food and energy items, rose to 5.4 percent from a revised 4.8 percent in September. Restaurants and accommodation services inflation quickened to 7.7 percent from 7.0 percent, and nine of the thirteen commodity groups recorded faster annual increases. Inflation outside the capital region reached 8.2 percent, against 5.9 percent in the National Capital Region.

For rates, the print hardens the BSP’s position. A second consecutive monthly acceleration, a core rate moving away from target, and a peso that hit record lows in late October together point to tightening pressure rather than patience at the bank’s next meetings, and they raise the real cost of the energy shock for an economy whose growth had already slowed earlier in the year.
