Thailand moves to block Bitget over unlicensed trading

Technology Friday, November 6, 2026 - Updated Nov 6, 2026 21:41

Thailand's Securities and Exchange Commission has filed a criminal complaint against BG Limited, the operator of crypto exchange Bitget, for allegedly running an unlicensed digital asset exchange from 2022 to 2025, and access to the platform will be blocked from December 5.

Why it matters: Thai users holding assets on Bitget have until December 5 to act, and the complaint lands five days after a Bitget-linked buyer is due to complete its takeover of GMO-Z, a licensed Thai exchange, leaving the group's regulated route into Thailand in question.

Data as of Securities and Exchange Commission of Thailand enforcement listing for SEC News No. 241/2026, dated November 5, 2026, read via search result from the regulator's own site in this run; CoinDesk report of November 6, 2026, read in full in this run, for the December 5 block, the GMO-Z takeover timing and Bitget's terms of use. The complaint is an allegation now with an inquiry official, not a finding. Developing item.

Thailand’s Securities and Exchange Commission has filed a criminal complaint with the Economic Crime Suppression Division against BG Limited, operator of the Bitget platform, alleging it operated a digital asset exchange without a licence from 2022 to 2025, charging fees and promoting its services in Thai through its website and social media, and the regulator has notified the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society to block access to Bitget’s website, domains and app from December 5, 2026, advising investors to act on assets held there before that date. The complaint also names Kritsana Kritsananuwat, accused of helping promote Bitget through Facebook and YouTube, and the case is now at the inquiry stage, so no offence has been established.

The timing puts Bitget’s lawful entry route in doubt: a Bitget-linked company, BTGT Management (Thailand), is due to complete its takeover of GMO-Z.com Cryptonomics, a licensed Thai exchange and brokerage, on November 30 after the seller, GMO Internet, delayed the transfer from October 31 for regulatory approval work, and the SEC has not said whether the complaint affects that deal.
