CENTCOM sets up Task Force Iron Gate against Iranian land routes

Politics Saturday, November 7, 2026 - Updated Nov 7, 2026 09:43

US Central Command is setting up Task Force Iron Gate, based in Tampa, to restrict Iran's movement of advanced weapons and sanctioned material across its land borders and the Caspian Sea, extending the months-long naval blockade.

Why it matters: Extending the blockade from sea to land targets the routes Tehran can still use for weapons, dual-use materials and revenue, and Central Command says the naval blockade alone has already blocked more than $25 billion in Iranian crude exports.

US Central Command is setting up a task force, named Task Force Iron Gate and based in Tampa, Florida, to restrict Iran’s movement of advanced weapons systems and other sanctioned material across its land borders and the Caspian Sea, Reuters reported, citing a Central Command statement seen ahead of an announcement due later on Saturday. The task force will work with US government agencies and also cover dual-use materials and illegal revenue streams.

Central Command commander Admiral Brad Cooper said strengthening collaboration with interagency partners would further constrain Iran’s ability to finance terrorism, rebuild weapons factories and replenish its military. Central Command estimated its naval blockade has prevented Iran from exporting more than $25 billion in crude oil.
