ECB presidency race narrows to Knot and Hernandez de Cos

Rates Saturday, November 7, 2026 - Updated Nov 7, 2026 07:11

Euro area governments closed nominations for the ECB presidency on Friday with only two candidates, Spain's Pablo Hernandez de Cos and the Netherlands' Klaas Knot, to succeed Christine Lagarde from February.

Why it matters: The two man field settles the succession contest into a hawk against a continuity candidate at a moment when the ECB is raising rates, and the choice will be bargained alongside the chief economist and market operations seats that also fall vacant in 2027.

Data as of Nominations closed November 6, 2026; Eurogroup President Kyriakos Pierrakakis statement of November 6, 2026 as reported by Reuters and read in full in this run via a Reuters syndication. The contest to lead the European Central Bank is now a two man race. Euro area nations closed nominations on Friday with Spain putting forward Pablo Hernandez de Cos, general manager of the Bank for International Settlements and a former governor of the Bank of Spain, and the Netherlands nominating Klaas Knot, who led the Dutch central bank for 14 years until 2025. They are the only candidates to succeed Christine Lagarde, who steps down on February 7, 2027, almost nine months before her term would have ended.

“At its next meeting on November 9, the Eurogroup will take stock of these candidacies,” Eurogroup President Kyriakos Pierrakakis said in a statement on Friday. EU leaders are expected to settle the appointment in December. A candidate needs the backing of at least 16 of the 21 euro area countries representing at least 65 percent of the bloc’s population.

Reuters reported that ECB watchers do not expect either man to alter policy fundamentally in the near term. “Simplistically, Knot is seen as slightly more hawkish and de Cos slightly more dovish, although we would not overplay the policy differences between the two,” Modupe Adegbembo at Jefferies said, adding that the ECB is a consensus driven institution. Both men are seasoned crisis fighters who have spent most of their careers in central banking and years on or close to the Governing Council.

The presidency is only one of three top seats turning over. Isabel Schnabel, who heads market operations, leaves on January 3, 2027, and chief economist Philip Lane exits on May 31, 2027, so the succession is likely to be settled as a package. Reuters reported that if France secures the chief economist job, the presidency is more likely to go to Knot, and if Germany takes that role, de Cos may have the better chance. Choosing Knot would also force Dutch board member Frank Elderson to resign, since custom dictates that no country holds two board seats.

The new president inherits an ECB that is raising interest rates to combat inflation while debt sustainability concerns, centred on France, raise the prospect that the bank could eventually be forced back into bond markets. That combination, an inflation fight and a fragile sovereign backdrop, is what makes the December bargain consequential for euro area yields well beyond the announcement itself.
