Germany says it can send Ukraine no more Patriots

Politics Saturday, November 7, 2026 - Updated Nov 7, 2026 11:45

German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius said Germany has exhausted its ability to transfer more Patriot air-defence systems to Ukraine, because anything further could not be replenished and would leave gaps in Germany's own defence.

Why it matters: Germany has been one of Ukraine's main Patriot suppliers, so a hard stop from Berlin shifts the interceptor burden onto the other E5 countries just as Ukraine says it is receiving only about 12 Patriot missiles a month.

German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius said Germany has exhausted the possibilities for transferring Patriot air-defence systems to Ukraine, telling Focus that anything more provided now could not be replenished for the time being and would lead to gaps in Germany’s own defence, for which it could not bear responsibility. Pistorius said other states must now take on a greater burden, and that the issue will be discussed in mid-November in the Ramstein-format Contact Group on Ukraine.

The statement follows a call by Ukraine’s defence minister for the E5 countries, Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Poland and Italy, to consider transferring 10 percent of their stocks of interceptor missiles for Patriot and IRIS-T systems against future deliveries Kyiv expects. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said Ukraine receives on average only 12 missiles for its Patriot systems per month this year.
