MK Party seeks freeze on eThekwini results over alleged failures

Politics Saturday, November 7, 2026 - Updated Nov 7, 2026 07:14

The MK Party has lodged a formal objection asking the Electoral Commission of South Africa to freeze results capturing in eThekwini, alleging a system failure and mismatches between electronic leaderboards and physical results slips, claims the report notes are not independently verified.

Why it matters: The objection asks the IEC to delay Sunday's declaration of the local election results, and it lands in the metro where the MK Party is itself leading, so the dispute tests the declaration timetable rather than one party's defeat.

Data as of Local government elections held November 4, 2026; objection lodged Friday November 6, 2026 and reported November 7, 2026. Sowetan report read in full in this run. The irregularity claims are the MK Party's allegations, attributed as such throughout; Sowetan notes the objection does not identify the specific voting districts or wards affected, does not quantify the alleged discrepancies, and that the allegations have not been independently verified. IEC results figures are as reported on the morning of November 7, 2026, ahead of the declaration expected Sunday November 8, 2026.

The uMkhonto weSizwe Party, the MK Party, has demanded that the Electoral Commission of South Africa immediately freeze the capturing of election results in disputed voting districts and wards in eThekwini, alleging systemic failures, discrepancies in results and irregularities in the counting and verification process after the November 4 local government elections. The demand is in a formal objection submitted to the commission on Friday. It is a party’s objection, reported here as an allegation, not a finding.

The objection, signed by acting secretary general Lindiwe Makubu and addressed to IEC commissioner Titi Pitso, alleges that a system breakdown at the eThekwini results operations centre during live results capturing and data transmission disrupted data streams and altered visible audit trails. It further alleges severe arithmetic and physical mismatches between figures on the commission’s electronic leaderboards and the certified physical results slips, Form NP041, completed and counter signed by party agents at voting stations, and failures in the physical verification, reconciliation and sorting of ballots between November 2 and 4. The party also objects to IEC statements accusing it of failing to deploy agents at voting stations.

What the party wants is specific. It asks for an immediate technical lock on disputed entries, a transparent forensic explanation of the network failure including a verification log, access for an independent forensic systems analyst appointed by contesting parties to examine the data processing systems and ballot reconciliations, a public withdrawal of the agent deployment remarks, and postponement of the final announcement and gazetting of municipal results until the disputes are resolved. The objection was lodged under section 65 of the Local Government: Municipal Electoral Act, with an application for condonation if it is processed after the Friday 5 p.m. deadline. IEC spokesperson Kate Bopela said the matter was in the hands of the commissioners, who respond directly to political parties.

The context cuts against a simple losing party narrative. On the IEC dashboard reported on Saturday morning the MK Party was leading the KwaZulu Natal provincial vote and leading in eThekwini itself, with about 40 percent of the ward vote there, and it stood third nationally on about 9.6 percent of the ward vote. Recounts in eThekwini and Msunduzi were already delaying finalisation, the provincial electoral officer said on Friday. The material question is therefore the timetable: final results are expected to be announced on Sunday, November 8, and the objection asks the commission to hold that declaration. Whether the commissioners accept, reject or answer the objection before Sunday is the next fact to watch, and Sowetan’s caution stands in the meantime: the objection names no specific districts, quantifies no discrepancy and attaches no results slips, and its claims are unverified.
